Has your fraternity ever held an election for a position, and no one wanted to run? Chances are, your fraternity ends up talking someone into running for the position, and they do a terrible job because they didn’t want to do it in the first place. If this has ever happened to you, have you ever stopped to think why this situation occurred?
There are normally two reasons why no one wants the position. First, the position is probably not desirable. Second, there might not be anyone who is qualified to fill it. The former is much easier to fix than the latter.
If the position isn’t desirable, then change it or eliminate it. Every position in the fraternity should be rewarding. If it isn’t, then you are doing something wrong. Also, I am a big believer in less is more. If your fraternity doesn’t warrant 75 vice-chairs of everything, then eliminate them.
That being said, if you have no one qualified to take the position, then that is a reflection on your fraternity.
For example, there was a big gap in leadership when I had just finished my first year as chapter president. As a result, a few brothers talked me into serving a second year. I wasn’t wild about the idea, but did it because I thought it was the best idea of the fraternity.
I was wrong. I was IFC president, and a senior trying to plan for life after college. I had put all my time and energy into making my first year as chapter president the best it could possibly be, and I really didn’t have much left for year two. As a result, my fraternity didn’t improve my second year. We just treaded water.
In hindsight, even though the next group of leaders was perceived to be too young, they should have taken over leadership of the fraternity. They were eager, and wanted the opportunity, but wrongly felt that they were too inexperienced.
Remember that you can gain experience, but it is much more difficult to gain enthusiasm.
