Most fraternity brothers have an ‘us vs them’ attitude with the fraternity’s national headquarters. This mindset couldn’t be further from wrong. The staff of the fraternity always has your best interest at heart, and they can be a strong ally if you let them.
One reason why they can be a strong ally is that they are the one constant in the fraternity. Brothers will come and go through chapters, but the national headquarters will always be there.
A great example of this benefit was with my chapter’s house. We rented our chapter house, and our landlord requested a sizable security deposit.
We stayed in that house for several years. When we moved out, the brothers who started the lease were long gone (me), and none of the current brothers knew about the security deposit.
When I found out about this, I told them that all they needed to do was show the landlord the lease and we could get the deposit back. Of course, no one had a copy of the lease. To make a long story short, the chapter was out a lot of money because of it.
If I would have been smarter, I would have sent a copy to our fraternity’s national headquarters to make sure that this important document wasn’t lost.
Chapters pay the fraternity’s national headquarters a lot of money to provide very valuable services to the brotherhood. Be sure you are taking advantage of these services to not only protect your chapter, but to also make it stronger.
