When I decided that I wanted to be apart of the Greek community, it wasn’t that hard to decide which fraternity best fit me and vice versa. It was 1997, I was an eager new member and finally felt as if I found a place to belong. I was coming close to the end of my new member period when I received a phone call from home. My mother said that my grandmother was not doing well.
My colony is a great group of guys and our nationals is behind us 100% towards our chartering, but our school’s IFC and student life refuse to let us ‘on campus’. We are not recognized by either of these institutions and, therefore, cannot officially mix with any sororities or hold any official functions on campus.
I was recently elected to the position of fraternity president of a local fraternity. My fraternity is fairly young, though due to virtue of transfer students, we happen to have brothers at other schools around the country. I believe that we are at a critical point in our fraternity’s life, in which the contemplation to become national is here.
Does joining a fraternity look good on my resume?
The school I’m at now didn’t have a chapter, so I tried starting one myself. It wasn’t even my idea at first, but my friends started the idea in the fall of 2011 and were down to start a chapter with me. I thought it would be a great opportunity, but this past year I’ve been a one man team.
What can we do to change our neighbor’s perspective on our fraternity? We have offered him community service, food, etc. numerous times but he has always replied, “I don’t need any help, I will call the cops whenever you have people over.”
